I am excited to announce that we will resume music club on Tuesday, January 24th. We will be welcoming fourth and fifth graders to rehearse for a spring concert titled “Tropical Recorders”. We will be playing a good deal of recorder music, accompanied by xylophones and other classroom instruments.

I will use this as my primary communication tool to send announcements regarding rehearsals and performance dates. Fall is in the air, and for me and my fourth graders, that means one thing: Time to play recorders! Letters will be going home soon with information about ordering your own recorder, but if you can't wait, here's where we'll be getting them this year: http://tinyurl.com/woodnote Shipping is free, and there is a nice selection of colors on the website.
Fifth grade has begun learning to play guitars! Thanks to a grant from PTA and a great sale at Musician's Friend, we've added three new guitars to the music room. Students are invited to bring their own guitars to music class as well (with parent permission). Fourth graders have a special field trip coming up soon! They are going to see the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra in concert. You can learn all about the composers who wrote the music here.
We have been learning a a lot about reading and writing rhythms lately in the music room. Often, it helps to relate rhythmic values to fractions--the visual aid of a pie is particularly helpful. Third grade has particularly enjoyed playing with fraction pies at Phil Tulga's Music Through the Curriculum. Ask your child to tell you all about it and have fun exploring rhythms together!
Kindergarten classes are preparing to present The Mitten. Please read the Jan Brett book by the same name with your child--it's a cute story with lovely illustrations. Your students can practice the songs here.
We've been having a great time in music class singing lots of seasonal songs. One thing the students have really enjoyed is singing along with the Youtube playlist I created with sing alongs for Hannukah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. The videos aren't mine, but I chose them after carefully searching for fun songs of the season. I want us to enjoy the music! As an added bonus, we're practicing reading fluency when we sing the words on the screen.
One of my favorite learning tools is coming our way--recorders! I look forward to this fourth grade unit every year. We continue using our recorders in fifth grade as well. Parents, letters are coming home with more details, but here's the main idea: recorders cost $5-10 in stores and online. If you'd like, you can buy your student a recorder through the school for $5. Fourth graders will begin learning to play their recorders the last week of October! Fifth graders have begun their study of guitars! We only have five guitars here at school, so we're working in small groups to learn new skills together. If you have a guitar at home, ask your fifth grader to share what they've learned in music class. Students are welcome to bring their own accoustic guitars to music class--with parent permission, of course.
Some students have expressed concern that their guitar is missing strings or otherwise in disrepair. While I can't repair a broken guitar, I can replace the strings on one and tune it. If missing strings is the only concern, feel free to bring your guitar (and new strings) the day before you have music class, so we won't have to use valuable class time replaing the string. |
